Have you ever wanted to create or backup your bookmarks? Do you want to arrange links to all of your favorite websites? Whenever you are surfing the Internet and come to a great website to which you plan to return, all you need to do is store the website in you Favorites. When you are ready to come back, you are just a click away. There are some tips that you can use to get the most out of your Favorites.

To see your current list of Favorites, just click on the Favorites button on your browser. If you would like to add a site to your Favorites list, simply right-click anywhere on the page you would like to save and choose the Add to Favorites option from the menu. If you want to save the page in a particular folder, all you have to do is use the Create In option and choose a folder. Select New Folder if you want to store the page in a new place. Click OK and you are done. It is that simple, now you can return to the current web page again and again just by clicking on the website’s name in your Favorites list.

Everyone has heard of fishing. You throw in a line, and catch a fish. A little time, a little effort, and it can result in a great reward. But not everyone has heard of phishing.

Phishing is when a website is not a legitimate website – and you can unknowingly enter personal details into it, giving the criminals everything they need to empty your bank accounts or steal your identity.

This can happen when you receive an email stating that your bank has ‘lost your personal records, and if you log onto the link below they’ll be sure to update them for you’. So you click on the link in the email, and are taken to a rather convincing website that looks almost identical to your regular bank/credit union/Paypal account/credit card website. You enter your account number, PIN, password and date of birth – and the criminal has everything they need as they obtain these details from you.

The simplest way to avoid this kind of phishing attempt is to ignore any emails purporting to be from financial institutions etc, and always log onto a website from the browser.

Of course, spyware/anit-virus software is also great for avoiding these types of attacks, but more about them later.

Do you download music from Limewire a Peer-to-Peer file sharing website? Apart from being able to download the MP3 music files of your choice, you also have to share some of your own MP3’s so that other members may access and upload tracks from them.

It is vital that you choose a separate individual folder in which to download your Limewire MP3 music tracks. Never use My Documents as a place to store your MP3 downloads because to do so, you place every document within My Documents at risk of being downloaded also. If you have personal information files in My Documents, I am sure you would like to keep them private.

Have you had any problems associated with your use of Limewire? Unfortunately, many people have. However, if you follow the advice of the previous paragraph any untoward nasty attachments will be localized in that folder only.

It would also be in your best interests to have your computer protected by a well known anti-spyware program and make a point of upgrading your spyware program’s protection by regularly checking for and installing updates.

There are 2 anti-spyware programs highly recommended – AntiSpyware Bot which removes spyware only and it not suitable for use with Window’s Vista. The other program is AntiSpyware which has been certified as Vista friendly, and it has the added bonus of being an adware removal tool as well.

Just remember, forearmed is forewarned.

We have all heard of Limewire, a Peer-to-Peer file sharing program, and many people blame it for causing issues on their computer. Many people use the program to illegally download music and other media files. You will not have issues on your computer if you use Limewire properly and have adequate protection. Here are some tips

Never download .exe or program files.

Do not download zipped or compressed folders.

Do not download adult content.

Designate a single folder only for the content you download. (Don’t use My Documents)

It is important to understand that, as a Limewire user, you not only are downloading files, but your are uploading them as well. It is important to follow the last tip shown above. The folder you specify to hold all of your music or other multimedia downloaded by Limewire, is viewable and can be downloaded by other Limewire Users. For example: If I was to set up Limewire and set My Documents as my folder to hold my downloaded files, all of my other documents and files in my My Documents folder, could be downloaded by anyone using Limewire. This includes tax information, social security numbers and more.

You need to be protected by an anti-spyware program when using Limewire. I always use AntiSpywareBot because it protects me from nearly all issues associated with the use of Limewire. Always make sure you have an updated anti-virus program.

With these tips you will safely use Limewire and protect yourself from issues associated with this program.

Best Regards,
Matt

Here at mysafepc.net, I usually recommend AntiSpywareBot as a spyware removal tool. While this program is very effective, it is not very stable on Vista, and it’s not Vista Certified. I have found another program called AntiSpyware, which is Vista Certified and very user friendly. The program is also very effective in removing spyware and adware, two very annoying types of infections which slow down your PC. I highly recommend this software because I have made the switch from AntiSpywareBot to AntiSpyware now that I have vista.

Is your computer slow? Have you already tried to clean up your computer and are looking to give your computer a little boost? Within your computer lies numerous components, one of which is memory or RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is used as a temporary storage for files, in not specific order, thus the term random. This digital memory is more efficient than the writing of data on a hard drive where the physical action of writing data takes more time. RAM stores temporary data which is used in the loading of programs and the startup of your computer.

THE IDEA IS : THE MORE MEMORY = THE BETTER PERFORMANCE. My advice, clean up your computer, and upgrade your computer to the maximum supported memory. Replacing memory chips is easy. First, go to crucial.com and use their free memory scanner tool. The results will show you exactly what type of memory you can upgrade to. Order the maximum memory supported by your computer. But Matt, I don’t know the first thing about installing RAM!? Installing memory is the easiest upgrade you can possibly make to your computer.

For laptops, just open a back panel on the notebook, and push down the sliver clips where the memory is installed. The chip will pop-up. Simply remove it from your computer and replace it with the new memory chip. The chip can only go in one way.

(Laptop Memory)

For desktops, open your case and look for the area on your motherboard where the memory chip is installed. Push on the clips at the end of the chips, and remove the chip. The replaced the old chips with the new ones. The Chips can only go in one way.

(Desktop Memory)

Installing more memory will create a noticeable difference in you system’s performance.

Best Regards,
Matt

With GeekSquad, Nerds-To-Go, and Firedog, there a certainly a number of choices when your are looking for PC support. I understand why most people do not want to set-up a wireless network. It does appear to be a daunting task. It is actually not too difficult and I will explain how to set one up in a later post. Many people call these places and have them come to their house an run a computer clean up. You can pay in the hundreds for this service. Why not do it yourself? Its really easy. Use the programs listed below to get the same results for a fraction of the cost of having a “geek” come to your house.

Find Out What’s Wrong: Many people cannot figure out what is wrong with their computers, so they don’t bother fixing it. There is a free diagnostic tool which runs a scan of your computer and makes various suggestions. Its called PCPitStop.com . It’s a great site. After you run a Full System Scan, select an issue and follow the instructions they give you to repair the issues. Don’t pay for their programs. They’re not work it.

Clean Up Time! : There are thousands of unnecessary files, including cookies and temporary files, which are hidden inside your computer. If you have never cleaned your hard drive, you will more than likely free up a Gigabyte of space. Use CCleaner. Its 100% Free and very effective. Check it out!

Defrag It! :If you have never defragmented your computer, you should. Your hard drive becomes fragmented with just daily use, which slows down load times. There is a defragmentor included in windows, but its not very good. I recommend AusLogics Disk Defrag. Its free and easier to use.

Remove Spyware: Spyware is the biggest threat to personal computer. If you do not have an antispyware program, GET ONE NOW! Your antivirus will usually not detect spyware. I absolutely love AntiSpywareBot. It’s the main reason my computer runs faster. The scan is free, but the cost is $20 to remove the issues.

Clean Your Registry: Your computers registry contains all the configuration settings in Windows and always contains missing keys, startup issues, errors, etc. This is the reason your computer crashes and shows error messages. I like RegCure. Its $30 but its money well spent. If you buy AntiSpywareBot, you can purchase their registry cleaner, RegClean, for only $10 more. This combo is also very effective.

RESTART!

If you follow all of these steps below it will cost you $30. This includes AntiSpywareBot and RegClean. Compare this to paying over $100 to some “nerd” like myself.

Software $30, Diagnostics $0, Hard Drive Cleaner $0 ……….Your sanity and computer’s stability = Priceless

Hope this helps,

Matt

What is Adware?

Adware is basically an advertising infection used for marketing purposes. This includes tracking cookies to track your activity on the internet and pop-up advertisements which appear even when your not online. Numerous tool bars on your internet browser can also be a sign of adware.
If you are experiencing infections like these (hopefully not as bad), I would recommend using the AdwareAlert program. They offer a free scan and the software is very effective when it comes to removing adware issues like the ones shown above. AdwareAlert is easy to use and costs only $29.95 to remove all of the issues. Download AdwareAlert Here.

This year your PC has been through a lot. Checking emails, writing documents, creating power points, and maybe even playing some games. Why not give your PC a nice gift, with a new years “clean up”. In this article we will go over some techniques and programs you can use to make your computer run faster this new year and free up some space on your hard drive.

Remove Spyware: I have said this a thousand times and I’ll say it again. You need to remove spyware from your PC because according to Wired News, “Spyware is the biggest threat to personal computing.” I couldn’t agree more. CNN also said, “…there is a 90% chance your PC is infected with Spyware.” In extremely simple terms, Spyware is one of the most popular reasons your PC runs slow, even if you do have the most advanced antivirus software. Remove these infections using AntiSpywareBot which can be downloaded for a free scan here. To remove all of the issues detected, you need to pay $19.95, but it is totally worth it. I use this software personally and it’s worth every penny.

Clean up Your Registry: Registry Issues is the other leading cause of slow PC performance. All Windows PC’s have a registry which consist of vital configuration information. Many times these registry key’s become corrupted. Every time you install a program, or edit something in your control panel, it effects your registry. If you download AntiSpywareBot, and decide to purchase, get RegClean as well. Its only $10 more and it’s an effective program. I still swear by RegCure, but RegClean is an acceptable 2nd Place.

Defragment your Hard Drive: More than likely you PC has fragmented files on your Hard Drive, which slow down the loading of files on your computer. I recommend a defragmentation of your Hard Drive. Run a defragmentation using the AusLogics Disk Defrag program. It’s 1oo% free and you can download it at Download.com by clicking here.

Clean Up Unnecessary Files: Remove temporary files, cookies, your website history, and fix minor registry issues using CCleaner. This program is also free via Download.com and you can get it here.

Update your Anti Virus: Hopefully you have antivirus, but if it is outdated, it’s useless. I highly recommend you update your antivirus if it is not updated. Then run a complete scan of your PC. If you do not have an antivirus, get the free one I use personally, Avast!. It easy to use, better than paid programs, and offers free automatic updates. Download it here.

Tips:

If you use your computer within every 15 hours, do not shut it down. Specifically at night. If you are using it the next morning or afternoon, leave it on, or set it to sleep (standby). When you turn on your PC after it being shut down, you’re performing a “cold boot”. A cold boot can eventually wear away at your PC’s inside components because of the surge of electricity to them. Leaving your PC running at night, or on standby, prevents this from happening.

The biggest threat to the hardware of your computer is heat. Hardware are the physical components inside your computer. If your PC is laced with dust inside, its like having a layer of insulation inside your PC. This can eventually fry the components on the inside of your computer. To prevent this kind of damage, don’t leave your tower on the floor, keep it in a raised, dust free location.

With these tips and programs, your PC should be running like new in no time. Have a great New Years.

ParetoLogic has established itself over the years as a reliable and popular software development company and their Privacy Controls program definitely precedes their reputation. I downloaded the program, which was pretty quick, then installed it and ran a scan. I blinked once and the scan was done. In literally two second, this program found 463 infections. But what does this program actually do? Privacy Controls scans your PC for records that could be dangerous if shared. This program deletes these files which includes your website history, passwords, tracking cookies, IDs, credit card and bank account numbers. Privacy Controls deletes P2P (peer to peer) file sharing records which can be lurking inside your PC. It’ s scans records for Limewire, Morpheus, Bit Torrent, Kazaa, and more. Temporary files, Microsoft Office files, Email trash, and Multimedia history files are also removed. This flexible program is available on all Windows operating systems including Vista. Use the link below to download the program and run a free scan.

To remove the issues, you need to register the product for $29.95. Privacy Controls comes with a 60 day money back guarantee, and I highly recommended you at least give it a try with a free scan of your PC.
